AITA for telling a new skater she's not ready and having her quit the same night?

me (28F), derby, four nights a week, i run the intake sessions. new skater (24F), about five months in. she wanted to be on the roster for a bout in september. she's improved fast and she's fearless, which sounds like a compliment and in derby is the thing that puts people in a neck brace. she hasn't passed her minimum skills. specifically she can't take a hit on the turn and she hasn't done the whip work. i told her, in front of the group at the end of practice, that she's not ready and she's not on the roster. i thought i was being clear and fair because everyone hears the same standard. she left and hasn't come back. that was three weeks ago. two people have messaged me saying she was embarrassed. the standard is the standard and i'd fail her again. i've been doing intake four years and i've never had someone quit over it, so something about how i did it was different and i can't tell what.

the difference is i usually tell people one on one and i did this one at the end of practice because i was tired. that's it. that's the whole difference.

I run a league. The standard being public is good. The individual verdict being public is the part that costs you people, and you can have the first without the second.

NTA on the call — can't take a hit on the turn is a spinal injury waiting for a date. YTA on the venue, and you already suspect that or you wouldn't have noticed it was different this time.

Message her. Not to reverse it — to say the standard stands and you should have said it to her privately. She might come back for that.

"fearless" about a five month skater is a warning label. you were protecting her and she heard a ruling in front of her peers.

NTA. Also five months and wanting a bout roster is fast. Someone told her she was ready before you told her she wasn't.
