should i quit my day job at 52 to open a real brewery with my buddy Doug, using our retirement savings?
ok so background, i've been homebrewing in the garage for like 15 years and everyone always says i should sell this stuff. my buddy doug (54M) found a spot for lease, 2200 a month, and wants to go halfsies on startup costs which comes out to about 60k each. that's basically my whole 401k rollover from my last job change. my wife (49F) says she supports me but i can see the worry in her face every time i bring it up, we've got two teenagers and college is coming up fast. doug's already put his half in escrow and keeps texting me deadlines. part of me feels like this is the last shot i get to actually do the thing instead of just talking about it at parties, the other part of me knows most small breweries don't make it past year three and i am not trying to be the guy explaining to his kids why there's no college fund because dad wanted to live his hoppy little dream. genuinely can't decide if this is brave or just a midlife crisis with better foam.
