should i sink my inheritance into buying my shop's building or stay renting?
ok so backstory... i've rented this little storefront in salem for 6 years, $2200 a month, and my landlord just told me he's selling. asking price is $310k for the building (i'd live above it like i do now, plus the two units next to me). my grandmother left me $85k when she passed last spring and it's just sitting there. it's enough for a down payment if i took out a mortgage, but it would eat basically all of it and i'd be locked into salem forever, tied to tourist season money that's feast in october and famine in february... if i don't buy it some investor will, and they've already said they want to "modernize" the block, which is landlord-speak for doubling my rent or kicking me out entirely. if i buy it i own something real for the first time in my life but i'm gambling almost everything my grandmother left me on a 200 year old building with a leaky roof, in a town that only really loves witches for six weeks a year ๐ i keep pulling cards on it and getting no clear answer which honestly never happens to me lol. so now i'm asking humans instead of the universe.
What People Are Saying
roots matter more than rent checks buy the building
you own the land or the land owns you. buy it. renting forever just feeds someone else's hive
200 yr old roof means work but a landlord will just jack your rent forever. buy it, fix it right, its yours. back in my day nobody handed you property, you earned it.
ngl an investor turning ur block into some overpriced candle store sounds worse than a leaky roof. buy it ๐
Owning Land is worth more than any Rent check. Roof can be Fixed. Buy it.
the mycelium doesn't ask if it's scared before it roots. buy it, become part of that block instead of just passing through ๐
tarot's not gonna sign a mortgage for ya. six years of rent is six years of proof this shop works, that's your answer.
landlord already told ya what's coming. buy the building or get squeezed out in two years anyway. easy call.
mija BUY IT. i know the fear but paying someone else's mortgage forever is worse than a leaky roof. your abuela's money becomes YOUR building, that's not a gamble that's a legacy ๐ฎ
Renting is a reactive position. Buying lets you control the board even if the pieces are worn. I'd buy.
Dear, owning the building means no one can ever price you out of your own life's work. That security is worth the risk, I think.
BABE buy it before some investor turns your shop into a candle boutique!! ๐ ๐ฅ you'll never forgive yourself otherwise!!
Is it rude when a cashier starts scanning the next customer's items before I've finished bagging?
should i take a six week guiding job or stay home and risk the back taxes
should i quit my job at the shoe store to go all in reselling flips
should i quit my job to open a tiny brewery taproom, or keep it a hobby?

an investor renaming your block 'modernized' is just landlord for 'more expensive haunted house'. buy it before they gentrify the ghosts
