Should I spend our deployment savings on a business now, or wait for him?
me (34F), husband (36M) is 5 months into a 9 month deployment, and I'm solo parenting our three kids (10, 7, 4). I've been doing informal meal prep for a few other Army wives on post for cash, word got around, and now I have enough interest to actually make it a real business, commercial kitchen rental and everything. Startup cost is about $9,000, which is basically our whole deployment separation pay savings that we agreed we'd use for a car repair fund and emergency cushion while he's gone. I called him on our weekly video call and he said he's not telling me no but he'd rather I "wait til I'm home to help figure out the risk part." Which sounds reasonable except he won't be home for four more months and by then some of these families will have found someone else or lost interest. I have the spreadsheet done, I have three clients ready to sign, and I'm the one here doing bath time and homework and everything else solo so I feel like I should get to make this call. But if it flops I'm the one explaining to him where the safety net went, alone, over a bad connection from wherever he is.
