Should I go back to school at 34 to restart in a career I might not even land?
34, work in insurance, been there eleven years. good at it, paid well, completely dead inside about it. i've wanted to do nursing since i was a kid and kept telling myself it wasn't practical. the program is two and a half years. i'd have to drop to part time or quit, take on loans, and be the oldest person in the room by a decade. by the time i'm licensed i'm pushing 37 and starting at the bottom of a hard, exhausting job while my friends get promoted in careers they started young. my partner says do it, life's long, 37 me will thank 34 me. my dad says i'm about to throw away a stable thing chasing a feeling and i'll be paying loans into my fifties. both of them might be right. i honestly can't tell if this is the bravest thing i'll ever do or a very expensive midlife detour.
