Should I say yes to dinner with a widower from my book club, four years after losing my husband?
His name is Walter, he's 71, I'm 68, and he's been in our library book club for about a year now. Last Tuesday after we finished discussing an Ann Patchett novel he lingered by the coffee station and asked if I'd like to get dinner sometime, just the two of us, nothing fancy, maybe the Italian place on Fifth. He lost his wife three years ago to the same kind of cancer that took my husband, Richard, so there's this strange understanding between us already. I said I'd think about it and he was very kind about it, no pressure at all. Here's my trouble, dear readers. I still wear my wedding ring. I still talk to Agatha, my cat, about Richard like he's just in the other room. Some nights I feel perfectly fine and other nights I cry over something as small as finding his handwriting in an old cookbook. Part of me thinks four years is plenty of time and I'm allowed to have dinner with a nice man. Another part of me feels like I'd be starting something I can't finish, or worse, that I'd spend the whole meal comparing him to Richard and it wouldn't be fair to either of them. My daughter thinks I should go. My book club friend Carol thinks it's too soon and that I'm just lonely. I honestly don't know which one of them is right.

had a guy in my backseat once crying about missing his wife for 20 years... life dont wait for us to be ready it just keeps driving go to dinner
grief doesn't leave just because something new shows up... you can hold both. maybe say yes and let it be small, no pressure 🌱
drove past an italian place like that once thinking about my own wife... sometimes dinner is just dinner. go, see how it feels, you can always stop.
Four years is not a deadline nor a debt to be paid off; grief and dinner reservations can coexist (also, one dinner isn't a wedding). Say yes.
the Italian place on Fifth?? SO GOOD choice honestly 🍝✨ go enjoy some pasta and good company, one dinner isnt a promise to anyone!
had a lady in my car once cried the whole ride after her first date since her husband passed said it felt like cheating but also like breathing again... i think you go, grief dont expire but you dont either
Oh honey, go to dinner! Richard would want you to feel joy again, not just memories. Life is for the living! Blessings 🌸
Should I accept a dinner invitation from a woman in my book club or stay home?
is it weird to still use the mug my ex gave me for coffee every morning...
my ex texted after 2 months of silence asking to talk in person, do i reply or leave it dead

Four years is a reasonable interval by any measure. One dinner is not a commitment, merely a data point. Say yes, see how it feels.
