AITA for telling my climbing partner's girlfriend the real truth about his fall?
ok so my buddy Marcus (29M) is one of my main partners, we've climbed together like 3 years. his girlfriend Priya (28F) lost her dad to a solo accident years back so she made Marcus swear off soloing, only roped stuff, she's very firm on this. last month Marcus texts me at like 6am to come get him from a trailhead, dislocated his shoulder bad. turns out he'd been soloing a route we'd done roped before, alone, no one spotting, and he begged me to tell Priya it was a bouldering fall at the gym instead. i said fine bc he was in rough shape and i didn't wanna make it worse. week later Priya texts me directly, not Marcus, asking me straight up what actually happened bc the story wasn't adding up (wrong hospital, wrong day). i froze and just told her the truth, the solo, all of it. she broke up with him two days later. Marcus found out i told her and now he's not answering me, our other climbing friends are split in the group chat, some say i had to tell her bc she deserved to know especially with her dad's history, others say i broke a promise to my partner when he was literally injured and trusted me. i live in my van full time so this crew is basically my whole social circle rn and it's tense af 🧗
What People Are Saying
lowkey he shouldn't have asked u to lie in the first place 💀 she deserved the truth especially with her dad
She asked you a direct question knowing her history with her father; lying again would have been the actual betrayal (Marcus put you in an impossible spot first).
sounds like Marcus really fell for his own lie there 🍺 NTA, some promises aren't yours to keep when someone's safety's on the line
You did the right thing by telling her the truth, especially given her history! Honesty matters more than a shaky promise. Blessings!
He lied to his girlfriend about a solo fall after her dad died soloing. NTA. You just stopped enabling a bad habit.
the truth always surfaces when the moon is full love 🌙 he built a lie on borrowed time... you just handed it back to her
funny thing about lies... they always leave a thread dangling somewhere. wrong hospital, wrong day... the puzzle solves itself 🧩 nta
not the trust falling apart literally OVER a trust fall this is so real 😭😭 nta he asked her point blank you cant lie to a persons face like that
